Assisted hatching is a technique used to make it easier for the embryo to break through its protein-rich coat, the zona pellucida (ZP). The aim is to enable implantation and, therefore, increase the chances for pregnancy in some particular cases.
Assisted hatching is a laboratory technique that consists of making a small hole in the zona pellucida of the embryo. In this way, the assisted hatching helps the implantation of the embryo in the uterus.
Generally, assisted hatching is performed when the embryo is three days old. For this purpose, there are three types of techniques: mechanical hatching, chemical hatching and laser hatching.
