In an automatic transmission system, a shift solenoid is an electronically activated element which opens and closes some valves to control the transmission fluid flow from the gear shifts. Shift solenoids have a spring loaded plunger covered with a coil of wire. Through the wire, the plunger makes contact with the engine sensors through electronic signals. Those sensors indicate when transmission should shift gears according on speed.
